Government of Timor-Leste, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries
Objective & Description
This partnership will achieve strong, sustainable economic growth through direct market links between producers and buyers of fresh vegetables. Kmanek Supermarket agrees to purchase farmers produce at an acceptable level of quality. The USAID project trains farmers to grow higher quality vegetables with greater productivity per hectare. Funding from ConocoPhillips enables the project to work with more farmers in more communities than the USAID funding would allow.
This partnership contributes to the sustainable development of SIDS by closely linking supply and demand for fresh vegetables. This has ripple effect of creating additional opportunities within the value chain for input suppliers, wholesalers, and transportation providers. This model developed in Timor-Leste can be applied in other SIDS to accelerate economic growth.
Governance & Coordination Mechanisms
The Developing Agriculture Communities project has an informal agreement with Kmanek Supermarket for its participation; Kmanek Supermarket has guaranteed purchase contracts with farmers; USAID and ConocoPhillips have a Memorandum of Understanding for funding of agreed activities.
USAID trains farmers in improved cultivation techniques; Kmanek Supermarket supplies seed and inputs and purchases crops; ConocoPhillips funds expansion of training to additional communities.
