WMO and the Global Island Partnership signed a Memorandum of Understanding recently to highlight the need for Political Support to Advocacy for need of improved Weather and Climate Services in SIDS
The World Meteorological Organization is increasing its support to island leaders to build resilient and sustainable island communities with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Island Partnership. The MoU serves as the basis for collaboration between the two entities to work together toward common island resilience priorities and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The WMO will participate in the 2016 Steering Committee, Chaired by Palauís Ambassador to the United States, which will help to shape innovative, high-impact initiatives that will demonstrate how to build resilience. The Global Island Partnership celebrates ten years of impact on islands in 2016, led by the Presidents of Palau and Seychelles as well as the Prime Minister of Grenada, the partnership promotes action by inspiring leadership, catalyzing commitments and facilitating collaboration. The WMO serves as the UN Systems authoritative voice on the state and behavior of the Earthís atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. Through GLISPA, it will deepen its relationships with island leaders in addressing sustainability challenges.
